Old Fogeys FTW

Okay first of all, we are having a SPECTACULAR storm here … I mean, it’s just never ending.

It’s been thundering and lighting here for over 2 hours, and pouring rain for almost ALL of that time.  I don’t just mean a little bit of thunder and a little bit of lighting.  I mean on a scale of 1-10 in all the MANY storms I’ve seen in my life, and I’ve seen a lot growing up in the Pennsylvania country, this is a 9.  It’s literally one of the longest storms I’ve ever sat through.

A minute ago the lightning cracked and boomed so loud and in such succession that it sounded like canons were going off 10 feet from my window.  Then the old lady who has a daughter visiting down below me and one over, her daughter came out onto the balcony and was like “Mom that lightning just hit like right over there” and then about 5 minutes later were all the sirens and firetrucks.

Okay so anyway.  That all has nothing to do with this post.

This post is about Living Legacy.

I like this new promotion, let me say that.  Getting more players into this game is something that should have happened YEARS ago … but better late than never.  I guess, in retrospect, the game is at a better point now, and more attractive now, than it has been in its existence so far, so, now might be a good time to do it.  On the other hand … I felt that, at least 2 years ago, the game was in an excellent state, good enough to get many more players.  But SOE marketing has always seemed flimsy for EQ2.  Aside from a few trade magazines like EGM, MMOG, PLay, etc. there seemed to be very little synergy.  I mean, heck, I can’t even find the current all-in-one on the shelf at Best Buy.  (Okay, I saw one copy.)  Don’t get me wrong – I know that publishers have to pay big bucks to get shelf space and specify triple face-outs and whatnot — but I also know that in the video game world, SOE is akin to a publisher like Wiley, Harper Collins, or Random House.  That is to say (for those nto familiar with the book industry) FUCKING HUGE.  Not some little mom and pop operation.  And yet, finding a copy of EQ2 is like looking for a gray hair on a gorilla?

So anyhow … I do like that new players are getting invited, let me just say that.

Now on to my point.  I have one.  I am getting there.  This is a blog, after all.  I am allowed to ruminate.

While I DO appreciate any influx of players.  I also question the wisdom in leaving long-time subscribers (I don’t mean people with old accounts who can get the 4 years titles when they only played for a month or two — I mean paying subs who have paid every month for 4 years and not missed a day) feeling as if they have been shoved aside.  Even a little title would suffice — something totally unrelated to “veteran” rewards.  Again, I have never quite grasped how it’s fair that people who played a couple months then quit for 3 years come back and are “veterans” — so those rewards are kind of meaningless, IMO.  I am talking about giving a very special title to the paying subscribers — your MOST loyal customers.  It’s like offering the elite membership to an airport VIP for one of the private travel clubs.  Just … something that would tell other players — hey, not only is my account four years old, BUT … I also have actually been PLAYING the GAME and am a TRUE VETERAN … that kind of acknowledgement

.. would not only go a long way in making those players feel valued and appreciated … but look at it this way … if the only way to get it IS to pay and be a constant sub … well … I bet more thana  few people would think twice before quitting.

If MMO’s have taught us anything … it’s that, just like in real life, it’s all about the bling, baby.  Status, power, and wealth.

And being able to SHOW IT ALL OFF when you’re an old fogey.
