Brideshead Revisited

Wow.  I can’t say enough about this film.  I am something a British film aficionado, but even were I not, I would have to rate this rather highly.

Set in 1930’s England, this is an absolutely superbly told tale of two men who develop a friendship.  That friendship is later confounded by the introduction of a young woman, the sister of the heir to a large estate called Brideshead (actually Castle Howard, as we know it).  Based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh, this is a lush retelling of a master’s work.

Highly, highly recommended.

The Darjeeling Limited (3 stars)
Don’t expect The Royal Tenenbaums.  But if you like Wes Anderson’s films (Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic) and have a strange fascination with  Anjelica Houston, Owen Wilson, or Jason Schwartzman (no, it’s not by chance that he is the cousin of Sophia Coppola, and that Roman Coppola wrote Darjeeling, and that he also played in Marie Antoinette, a Coppola production), you’ll like this one.

Pretty Woman (3 stars)
Julia Roberts pre-megastar status.  Playing a hooker.  Notable now for strange backwards look at the culture of the late 1980’s.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (3 stars)
Brendan Frasier returns with a full head of perfect wavy hair, a wife that looks old enough to his mother and is definitely NOT Rachel Weisz, and some decent special effects.
